An AWACS is short for Airborne Warning and Control System. It is basically a Boeing 707 with two distinct features. First, it has no windows, but for that of the cockpit. Second, it has what looks like a giant spinning plate mounted to its roof. The spinning plate is an antenna, and it can track flying objects within a range of 175,000 sq. mi. The AWACS has a flight range of over 5,000 miles at 35,000 feet.
Unlike ground radar, since the AWACS is basically a flying antenna, it can be deployed quickly anywhere, unlike ground radar. In addition to the Saudi Royal Air Force, it is used by the US, NATO, France, and the UK.
